How to Use the Success Planner
Our integrated calculator helps you understand your current standing and plan for the future. Here’s how to use both powerful modes.
Semester Grade Mode
Enter your current course categories, weights, and grades. Leave a category's grade blank (like the final exam) to activate the "Outcome Projector" and see how different scores will impact your final grade.
Cumulative GPA Mode
Switch to this tab and enter your previous cumulative GPA and total credits. The tool will automatically use your calculated semester GPA to show you your new, updated cumulative GPA.
Live Updates
The calculator is fully interactive. As you add categories, enter grades, or use the projector sliders, all relevant numbers update in real-time. No "calculate" button needed!
The Strategic Advantage of Integration
By combining semester and cumulative calculations, this tool provides a complete picture of your academic health, helping you make smarter decisions.
- See the Big Picture: Instantly understand how your performance in one semester directly impacts your long-term cumulative GPA.
- Goal Setting: Use the cumulative tab to see what semester GPA you need to achieve to reach a target cumulative GPA by the end of the term.
- Informed Decision Making: Helps you decide whether to drop a class or switch to Pass/Fail by showing the precise effect it will have on your overall academic record.
The Outcome Projector
This is the most powerful feature in the "Semester Grade" tab. By leaving the grade for a future assignment (like a final exam) blank, a slider appears. This allows you to drag the slider and see in real-time how scoring a 70%, 80%, or 90% on that final will change your overall course grade and semester GPA.
Understanding the Formulas
Our calculator uses two standard academic formulas to ensure your results are accurate and reliable.
Semester GPA
Calculated by dividing the total quality points earned in a semester by the total credits taken in that semester. (Total Quality Points) / (Total Credits)
Cumulative GPA
Calculated by adding your new quality points to your previous total, and dividing by the new total number of credits. (Old Points + New Points) / (Old Credits + New Credits)
Frequently Asked Questions
Get quick answers to common questions about calculating and planning your semester and cumulative GPA.
Why are my GPA and Percentage Grade different?
Your Percentage Grade is the weighted average of your scores in one class. Your Semester GPA is the average of your grade *points* across all classes, weighted by credits. For example, getting an 88% (a B+) in a 4-credit class has more impact on your GPA than getting a 95% (an A) in a 1-credit class. The calculator handles these different weightings for you.
What grade should I enter if a category isn't complete?
You have two options: 1) Enter your current average in that category (e.g., your average quiz grade so far). This will show you your grade *if you continued at that pace*. 2) Leave the grade field blank. This tells the calculator that the category is in the future and activates the "Outcome Projector" slider, allowing you to see how different potential scores in that category will affect your final grade.
How are letter grades converted to GPA points?
The calculator uses a standard 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. If you enter a percentage, it is first converted to a letter grade based on a standard scale (e.g., 93%+ is an A) and then to its corresponding GPA point value.
