A Complete Battle Plan
How is the Required Grade Calculated?
The calculator uses a straightforward weighted average formula to determine the score you need on the final exam.
Let's break it down:
- First, we determine the weight of your current grade. If your final is worth 20%, your current grade is worth the other 80%.
- We multiply your current grade by its weight. (e.g.,
85% × 0.80 = 68
). This is how many points you've "banked" toward your final grade. - We subtract these banked points from your desired grade (e.g.,
90 - 68 = 22
). This is how many points you still need to earn from the final exam. - Finally, we divide the points you still need by the exam's weight (e.g.,
22 / 0.20 = 110
). This gives you the score you need on the final—in this case, 110%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Get quick answers to common questions about calculating your final grade.
What if the calculator says my goal is "Impossible"?
This means that even if you score a perfect 100% on the final exam, your final grade in the class will still be lower than your desired grade. It's a sign that your current grade is too low to reach that specific target with the remaining weight of the final.
What does "Goal Achieved" mean?
This means your current grade is already high enough to guarantee your desired grade, even if you score a 0% on the final exam. Congratulations, you've already met your goal for the course!
What if my final is composed of multiple parts?
You should combine all the parts into a single "final exam" category. For example, if you have a final presentation worth 10% and a final test worth 15%, you would enter the "Final Exam Weight" as 25
(10 + 15). You would also need to calculate your "Current Grade" based on all coursework *except* those two final components.
