How to Use the Test Score Analyzer
Unlock a deeper understanding of your test performance with our comprehensive analysis tool.
Enter Your Score
Input the points you earned and the total possible points for the test or assignment.
Provide Context (Optional)
For a deeper analysis, enter the class average. This allows the tool to benchmark your performance against your peers.
Analyze the Results
Instantly see your percentage, letter grade, and a full breakdown including points missed and your standing relative to the class average.
Go Beyond the Percentage
A single number doesn't tell the whole story. Our analyzer provides the context you need to truly understand your performance.
- Performance Benchmarking: By comparing your score to the class average, you can see if the test was difficult for everyone or if you have specific areas to improve.
- Identify Improvement Areas: The "Points Missed" metric gives you a clear, tangible number to focus on. Reducing this number is the key to a better grade next time.
- Strategic Insights: The tool provides a written analysis of your performance tier, helping you understand what your score means in a broader academic context.
What are Performance Tiers?
We classify your percentage into tiers to give you a quick understanding of your mastery:
- Excellent (90%+): Comprehensive understanding.
- Strong (80-89%): Strong grasp of concepts.
- Proficient (70-79%): Solid understanding, with room for improvement.
- Developing (Below 70%): Foundational knowledge, focus on key areas.
Understanding Grading Scales
Different courses can have different grading standards. Our calculator adapts to the most common ones.
Standard Scale
The most common scale where 90% is an 'A', 80% is a 'B', and so on. This is the default for most courses.
Honors (+/-) Scale
A more granular scale that includes plus (+) and minus (-) grades, like A-, B+, etc. This is common in college and advanced high school courses.
Pass/Fail Scale
Some courses are graded simply on whether you passed or failed, usually with a threshold around 70%. This scale is for determining that outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Get quick answers to common questions about calculating test scores and analyzing your grades.
Why should I enter the class average?
Entering the class average provides crucial context. If you scored an 80% but the class average was 65%, your performance is actually very strong. Conversely, if you scored an 88% but the average was 92%, it indicates the test may have been easier and you performed slightly below your peers. It helps you understand your score more deeply.
How is the letter grade determined?
The calculator uses a standard grading scale based on your selection. For the "Standard" scale, a 90% is the cutoff for an 'A'. For the "Honors (+/-)" scale, a 93% is an 'A', a 90% is an 'A-', an 87% is a 'B+', and so on. These are common thresholds but may vary slightly by institution.
Can I use this for a category with multiple assignments?
Yes. You can total up all the points you earned in a category (e.g., all your homework assignments) and enter that into "Points Earned." Then, total up all the possible points for that category and enter it into "Total Possible Points." This will give you your overall percentage for that entire category.
